Range Rover Velar Engine Replacement Cost: What Sets the Price

Range Rover Velar engine replacement cost depends on which engine your car has and whether it is an early Velar or a later mild hybrid. It also depends on whether the replacement unit is used, reconditioned or rebuilt, the labour and coding involved, and what caused the original failure. Some Velars are covered by a recall that affects the turbo oil feed, and the later mild-hybrid models have electrical faults that can look like engine trouble. So diagnosis and a recall check come first, followed by an itemised written quote. This guide explains each factor.

Which Velar Engine Do You Have?

Which Velar Engine Do You Have

The Velar (L560) has been sold since 2017 with a wide range of four-cylinder, six-cylinder and V8 engines. Around 2020 the range moved to mild-hybrid versions, which changes the job.

Early Velars vs Mild Hybrids

Era

Typical engines

What it means for replacement

Early Velar (about 2017–2020)2.0 Ingenium diesel (D180, D240), 2.0 Ingenium petrol (P250, P300), 3.0 V6 diesel, 3.0 V6 supercharged petrol (P380)Conventional engines, with used and reconditioned units more widely available
Mild-hybrid Velar (about 2020 onwards)2.0 Ingenium diesel and petrol MHEV, 3.0 Ingenium six-cylinder diesel and petrol MHEVA 48-volt system adds electrical checks and coding
Plug-in hybrid2.0 petrol PHEVHigh-voltage safety procedures and hybrid checks
SVAutobiography Dynamic5.0 supercharged V8A larger, more complex engine with supercharger and cooling work

The years and badges are approximate. Confirm your exact engine code from the V5C or VIN before you ask for quotes. Some engines look similar but are not interchangeable.

What Decides the Cost

What Decides the Cost

Unit Type, Labour and Coding

Unit type

What to expect

UsedFitted as found, so its condition depends on the donor car's history
Reconditioned or remanufacturedPrepared and rebuilt to a set specification, then tested
Rebuild of your own engineKeeps the original engine number. Depends on the condition of the block and crank

Labour. Removal, fitting and transferring ancillaries take workshop time. Six-cylinder, V8 and hybrid versions usually take longer than a four-cylinder.

Coding. The engine must be matched to the car's control units. Mild hybrids and plug-in hybrids need their systems checked and set up as well.

Our Range Rover engine replacement service covers removing the failed engine, transferring ancillaries and testing the replacement, with UK collection available. If you'd like a matched unit sourced for you, our engine supply and fit service includes a tested reconditioned or remanufactured engine plus removal, fitting and testing.

Cause of Failure, Recalls and Parts

Check recalls first. Campaign N875 covers the turbocharger oil delivery pipe on some 2020–2024 Velars (and some Evoques and Discovery Sports). On these cars the pipe may not have been tightened enough and could leak oil in the engine bay. Recalls on mild-hybrid JLR models also cover DC-DC converter faults, which can cause loss of drive power. Check your car by registration on the GOV.UK vehicle recall checker before paying for engine work.

Fix the cause. Common reasons for Velar engine replacement include timing chain wear on the 2.0 Ingenium engines, oil dilution from interrupted DPF regenerations on the diesels, turbo failures that send debris into the engine, and overheating. Whatever failed, the cause must be fixed, or the replacement can fail the same way.

Part

Why it matters

Oil cooler and oil linesDebris from a bearing or turbo failure can stay inside
Turbo and oil feed pipeThey share the oil supply, so check them or replace them
Timing chain kit (Ingenium)Should be new or verified on the replacement unit
EGR, DPF and intakeCarbon and blockages affect the new engine
Cooling systemRadiator, hoses and housings
Engine mounts and consumablesMounts, fluids, filters and gaskets

Replace, Rebuild or Repair?

Replace, Rebuild or Repair

A replacement is not always necessary:

  • Repair suits a fault caught early, such as a timing chain, a turbo or a leak, before internal damage occurs. Our engine repair service reads fault codes and physically inspects the engine to confirm the cause before recommending any work.
  • Rebuild suits an engine whose block and major components are sound. See our engine rebuild service.
  • Replacement suits an engine damaged beyond economical rebuild, or a case where downtime matters.

On a newer Velar, also check whether the manufacturer's warranty or an extended warranty still applies.

What Your Written Quote Should Show

  • Diagnosis: what failed and why
  • Recall check: whether any open recall applies
  • Engine: the exact code and output, and whether the unit is used, reconditioned or rebuilt
  • Unit history: mileage and source, or the parts replaced
  • Labour: removal, fitting and transfer of ancillaries
  • Hybrid systems: MHEV or PHEV checks and coding, where relevant
  • Oil system: oil cooler, lines and turbo feed after a debris failure
  • Timing kit, EGR and DPF: what is included
  • Consumables: oil, filters, coolant, gaskets and mounts
  • Testing: pressure test and road test
  • Extras: how further faults will be approved before any work goes ahead
  • Warranty: the written terms, including mileage and conditions
  • Timescale: the estimated time to source and fit

FAQs

Velar Engine Replacement FAQs

Why don't you give a fixed price for Velar engine replacement?
The cost depends on the engine, the era, the replacement unit, the cause of failure and the parts needed. An itemised quote after diagnosis is the reliable way to find your cost.

Is a mild-hybrid Velar more complicated to re-engine?
Usually, yes. The 48-volt system and its control units need checking and coding alongside the engine.

Is my Velar covered by a recall?
Some 2020–2024 Velars are included in a recall on the turbo oil feed pipe, and some mild hybrids in DC-DC converter recalls. Check by registration on the GOV.UK recall checker.

Is a reconditioned engine better than a used one?
A reconditioned engine has documented work behind it and has been tested, while a used engine's condition depends on its history. Ask for documentation either way.

How long does a Velar engine replacement take?
It depends on sourcing the right unit and on what the inspection finds. Ask for an estimated timescale in your written quote.
