Why Is the Reconditioned 4.4 TDV8 448DT Engine the Best Replacement for Range Rover Vogue & Sport?

If your Range Rover Vogue or Sport left the factory with the 4.4-litre V8 diesel, a reconditioned 448DT engine is usually the most sensible replacement. It matches the car's original mounts, gearbox, wiring and engine management. It also costs considerably less than a new engine.

"Best" depends on two things:

  • The right 448DT variant for your car. The earlier 313PS TDV8 and the later 340PS SDV8 differ in ways that matter.
  • A properly reconditioned unit, fitted only after the cause of the original failure has been fixed.

This guide explains which models use the 448DT, what a proper reconditioning includes, and how to compare quotes.

Which Vogue and Sport Models Use the 448DT?

The 448DT is Land Rover's 4.4-litre (4,367cc) V8 common-rail diesel. Output ranges from about 313 to 340hp, with 700–740Nm of torque, depending on the version (Motorinsel).

Years are approximate and vary between data sources. Confirm the code against your engine or VIN before ordering.

Points to note:

  • The 3.6 TDV8 (368DT) is a different engine. It was fitted to earlier L322 Vogues and to the first-generation Range Rover Sport. A 448DT is not a direct swap for a 368DT car.
  • The 448DT name covers more than one version. Emissions equipment, turbo set-up, ancillaries and calibration differ between the L322 TDV8 and the L405/L494 SDV8. A replacement must match your vehicle's specification, or your old engine's parts must be correctly transferred and coded.

Range Rover Garage covers the 448DT on its Vogue Mk3, Vogue Mk4 and Range Rover Sport engine pages.

Why a Reconditioned 448DT Is Often the Best Replacement

Like-for-Like vs the Alternatives

Drawbacks

Reconditioned 448DTCorrect fit; renewed wear parts; usually better warranty than usedQuality depends on the reconditioner
Used 448DTLower upfront price in some casesUnknown history; shorter warranty; inherited wear
New engineMaximum certaintyHighest cost; availability varies
Rebuild your own engineKnown history; correct variantOnly viable if the block and crankshaft can be saved
Different engine (swap)Rarely sensibleMajor wiring, mounting, gearbox and coding work

A reconditioned unit sits between used and new on both price and confidence. That is why it is often the most practical choice for an older Vogue or Sport whose body and gearbox are still sound.

If your own engine's block and crankshaft can be saved, an engine rebuild of the original unit is worth pricing alongside a reconditioned one.

What a Proper 448DT Reconditioning Should Include

The word "reconditioned" is used loosely across the industry. Ask what was actually done to the engine. A thorough job should include:

  • Strip-down, cleaning and measurement of the crankshaft, bores, bearings and cylinder heads.
  • Machining where needed, such as crankshaft polishing or regrinding, honing and head skimming.
  • New wear parts: bearings, piston rings, seals, gaskets and timing components. The oil pump is often renewed as well.
  • Testing before supply, at least for compression and oil pressure.

Just as important is root-cause correction in the car itself, because a reconditioned engine can fail again if the original problem remains:

  • Turbo debris. If the old engine failed because a turbo broke up, debris can remain in the turbos, oil cooler and pipework. Clean or replace these parts.
  • Low oil level or pressure. Find and fix the cause, such as leaks, the oil feed, or the sump strainer.
  • Cooling-system faults. These must be repaired before the new engine runs.

Owners on L322 forums have described TDV8 engines entering restricted mode, with metal later found in the oil. These are individual reports and do not show how often failures occur. They do show why the oil system must be properly cleaned when a replacement engine goes in.

Range Rover Garage's supply and fit service covers:

  • sourcing a tested reconditioned engine matched to your vehicle;
  • removing the old engine and transferring ancillaries;
  • fitting in-house, with an itemised written quote.

When comparing quotes, check that each one states:

  1. The engine's specification. Is it TDV8 or SDV8, and is it confirmed for your vehicle?
  2. What was renewed during reconditioning, and how the engine was tested.
  3. Whether turbos, injectors and ancillaries are included or transferred from your old engine.
  4. Whether fitting, fluids, coding and an oil-system clean are included.
  5. The warranty: length, mileage limit, and whether it covers labour.
  6. VAT, and any exchange (core) surcharge.

Once the turbos, an oil-cooler clean and VAT are added, a low engine-only price can end up close to a fitted quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

Reconditioned 4.4 TDV8 448DT FAQs

Which Range Rovers use the 448DT engine?
The 4.4 TDV8 in the L322 Vogue from about 2010 to 2012, and the 4.4 SDV8 (later D340) in the L405 Range Rover and L494 Range Rover Sport from about 2013. Confirm the code for your vehicle.

Can a 448DT replace a 3.6 TDV8?
Not as a direct swap. The 3.6 TDV8 (368DT) is a different engine. Changing between them involves significant wiring, mounting and calibration work.

Is a reconditioned 448DT as reliable as the original?
A properly reconditioned engine has renewed wear parts and checked clearances. Its long-term reliability depends on the quality of the work, fixing the original cause of failure, and the servicing that follows. Compare the written warranty terms as well as the price.

How much does a reconditioned 448DT cost?
Advertised reconditioned and rebuilt 448DT units start at around £5,500, and supplied-and-fitted averages are around £6,200. VAT and scope vary between sellers. Owner-reported quotes have exceeded £8,000 for rebuilds.

Should I choose supply only or supply and fit?
Supply and fit puts the engine, the fitting and the warranty under one workshop. If one business supplies the engine and another fits it, a warranty dispute can arise over who is responsible.
